ISABEL is a film exploring the possibilities of compostable couture and speculative fashion. In reaction to the passing of Alonso’s Aunt to Covid-19, we investigated the concept of burial and the rituals that surround it. As a result, the physical garment displayed in the film is entirely made from compostable materials, which can be buried in the ground after use. Using photogrammetry, the model and dress are immortalised in the digital domain. Procedural textures continually blur the line between garment and environment and cultivate a deterioration akin to it’s real-world counterpart.

We used animated textures to demonstrate the process of composting occurring over time. The resulting visuals showed a garment slowly scattering and becoming one with the surroundings. After shooting, the garment itself was also buried, in order to fulfil the aim of compostability. It lives on in the digital realm, creating a striking contrast between temporary physicality and permanent virtuality.
